The referendum was really about two political careers

To quote Blackadder: “it rhymes with clucking bell”. We will soon be on our way out of the European Union because of a referendum that didn’t need to be called on an issue too complex for most people to understand. And it was all to save a politician’s skin.

There was never any mass public clamour for us to leave the EU. We were given a say on our future relationship with Europe to appease Tory backbenchers back in 2012/13. Rather than tackle them head on like a strong leader would, cowardly Cameron took an easy way out and caved into their demands for a public vote.
