A NEWBORN baby has been rescued by the Guardia Civil after he was allegedly left on a country lane in San Isidro by his mother, who had given birth in a derelict house, a spokesman for the force reported on Monday.

The little boy was discovered at around 15.00 on Saturday after a truck driver called the authorities to report he had seen a woman walking along with blood-stained legs and carrying what seemed to be a small bundle of blankets.

He was convinced that he could see the tiny limb of what appeared to be a baby poking out from amongst the blankets.

A patrol rushed from Almoradí to the area of empty ground by an industrial estate in San Idisro, where they found the woman.

She seemed well but firmly denied the witness’ story and refused treatment from the medical team that had attended the scene with another Guardia Civil patrol from Callosa de Segura.

But the officers noticed contradictions in the woman’s story so accompanied her to the ruined house where she had spent the night.
