Calls for ‘better class’ of tourists

The economy is booming, but tourism growth is lagging behind the vast agricultural sector

Almería’s economy continues to expand at its biggest rate since 2008, according to regional government figures released last week.

But the tourism sector growth rate continues to lag behind the all important farming sector, prompting assurances by the provincial council that it was seeking to increase the “quality and spend” of the tourists coming to the province.

An average of 54,000 people were employed by the farms of the province during the last quarter, according to the regional government employment statistics agency, but the tourism sector only directly employed 5,446 people across 248 businesses.
