Getting higher for cherry picking

A bear in a cherry tree – it’s not an unusual site in the Cantabrian mountains but they will have to climb to higher altitudes for their fruit.

A study carried out by Spain’s brown bear foundation (Fundación Oso Pardo) in conjunction with Oviedo university has found that due to climate change wild cherry trees will no longer be able to grow at lower altitudes.

It is the first fruit to ripen in the mountains after the winter and is therefore vital to the diet of the Iberian brown bear.
