Madrid assesses Brexit fallout in Spain

VALENCIA and Murcia plus the Canary and Balearic Islands will be most affected by the UK’s departure from the EU, according to an internal government report examining the effects of Brexit. As well as those regions with a high exposure to British tourism, the study says others with automotive, pharmaceutical and agribusiness interests will also feel the effects.

Details of the document, as reported by the El Pais daily, suggest that the Spanish economy will “suffer the negative consequences” of the departure of one of the country’s leading trading partners. Brexit, it adds, will lead to “innumerable repercussions” for more than a million people, while it notes that the status of British nationals resident in Spain and that of Spaniards living in the United Kingdom is a matter for concern.
