OFFICIALS have put out a call for beachgoers to respect the warnings of red-flag conditions in the sea, following the death of a man in rough seas in Torremolinos at the weekend, and nearly 20 rescues being carried out on local beaches while the red flag – which prohibits bathing – was flying.
The man who drowned on Sunday morning had not ignored the red flag, as he was swimming outside official lifeguard hours. However, later the same day red flags were flying at beaches throughout the town – and elsewhere on the Costa – yet many bathers ignored the swimming ban and lifeguards in Torremolinos had to pull nearly 20 people from the water.
