Debt-ridden Turre council is to hire experts to collect up to €1.4 million in outstanding rates, town planning councillor Martin Morales has told CA News.

The local authority, which is saddled with a €10.2m debt, has been struggling to balance the books since the 2008 credit crunch – and one ongoing problem is related to unpaid IBI (rates or property tax).

Sr Morales pointed the finger of blame at Cortijo Grande and Cortijo Cabrera, two residential neighbourhoods populated mostly by British expats, for falling behind in IBI payments.
