Plans for a new road intended to relieve congestion along Mojacar’s beach front were approved this week after years of delay and opposition.

The new 2.5 kilometre bypass will run from the Los Gurrullos petrol station and come out around the Avenida La Parata Cueva del Lobo roundabout.

Mojacar council will pay for the works at an estimated €4.5 million, saying the road is “of vital importance for both the town’s tourism and infrastructure”.

However the road, rejected by residents and environmentalists in the past, is still causing controversy.
