The mayor of Albox has banned football games from town squares after he “arrested” a ball from a game in San Francisco square in La Loma last week.
The move snowballed into a national news story after mayor Francisco Torrecillas published a photo of the ball at a local police station on Facebook, sparking huge debate.
He said: “I have started a campaign to confiscate balls. This one is from San Francisco square – it is under arrest at the local police station.” The post has since been removed.
The mayor visited the square to investigate complaints from residents about “dangerous” football and volley ball games.
