A decree law to crack down on abuses in the housing sector has been passed by the Valencia government.

The aim is to give local and regional authorities ‘legal instruments to guarantee and protect  everyone’s right to a decent home’.

Regional councillor for housing, Héctor Illueca said the legislation was designed to prevent ‘harassment’ of tenants and customers in the property sector.

He stated that a black hole had existed but they had corrected this with the threat of large fines – reaching up to €950,000.

The councillor stressed that they would be reinforcing their inspection teams to guarantee the legislation is adhered to.

They will ‘take action in cases in which the rules are being broken’.

A registry for landlords will be set up in which they will be asked to provide ‘information about their activities’.

This will contribute to a ‘cleaning up of real estate operations’.

Sr Illueco said they would also be introducing the ‘possibility’ that large letting companies could be forced to cede empty properties to the regional government ‘in exceptional circumstances’.
