The 2019 Boat Show grows and sets course towards sustainability and care of the sea
The 58th edition of the Barcelona International Boat Show will focus on the sustainability and environmental care of the sea and the oceans. Once again it will occupy the Fusta and España wharves of Port Vell, expecting an increase of between 5% and 10 % in comparison to last year. Additionally, and in line with previous editions, innovation and technology will be other major themes of the largest Spanish nautical event.
A day dedicated to the damage plastic waste causes to the sea, the presence of more sustainable boats and various activities for environmental awareness will be some of the activities that will take place at the Boat Show in a new edition placing emphasis on the need to care for the sea.
In this sense, the show’s president, Luis Conde, affirms, “We want to show that nautical enthusiasts are great lovers of the sea and that is why we are the first ones interested in defending it. For this reason we are working to carry out awareness activities with the aim of taking maximum care of our natural environment, as well as continuing to promote innovation and the implementation of technology in increasingly sustainable vessels.”
The show grows
The Barcelona Boat Show, which will be held from October 9 to 13, has already rented more than 60% of its exhibition area, so the organisers expect this year’s edition to grow again, reflecting in this way, the good performance of the sector, which has registered an increase in registrations of 5.5% in the period between January and May with a total of 2,466 pleasure boats, according to data from the National Association of Nautical Companies (ANEN).
Organised by Fira de Barcelona, with the collaboration of the National Association of Nautical Companies (ANEN), the Barcelona International Boat Show will confirm its status as a reference event of the Spanish nautical scene with the presence of leading companies.
The Port Vell site will host more than 300 exhibitors and 700 vessels in an edition in which most of the boats will measure up to 20 meters in length.
The show, which will occupy the España and Fusta wharves of Port Vell, will feature the largest floating exhibition possible in Spain at this time. On land, it will showcase a large number of small and pneumatic boats, as well the latest developments in electronic products, engines, paint, sails, trailers, charter and nautical services.
Show director, Jordi Freixas, points out that ‘the 2019 Boat Show will feature the principal companies in the sector and will demonstrate its status as a reference event both in its commercial and promotional aspects. That is why this year’s edition is emerging as one of the best ever since the Boat Show moved to Port Vell in 2012”.
The secretary general of the National Association of Nautical Companies (ANEN), Carlos Sanlorenzo, explains that “we have started the nautical season in a positive way this year and, in particular, the results for the month of May exceed an 8% growth in registrations of global pleasure craft nationwide. The charter market also, after months of consolidation, increased by 5.5% in May, reflecting that it remains one of the trends to enjoy ways of navigation in greatly demanded by nautical tourists”.
An extensive programme of activities gives content to the 2019 edition that, under the new motto ‘Seafarers” (Gente de Mar), wishes to strengthen its link to Barcelona and the people of Barcelona. For this reason, the organisation is in talks with the Amics de la Rambla association, the Restauradores Guild of Barcelona and the Fishermen’s Guild in order to carry out a series of activities to strength the link of the Boat Show with the city and the area surrounding Port Vell.
Along the same lines, the show, which unites professionals and the public, will feature a new attraction, the 100×100 Market, a fashion and accessories market with live music, food trucks and children’s area in the Moll of Spain, an area where more boats will also be on display. A new edition of the Nautical Night will also take place, with live music, fashion shows and food tasting.
Also, as is tradition, the event will have a wide range of activities. Thus, with the collaboration of the Oceanic Navigation Foundation of Barcelona (FNOB), and the Catalan Sailing Federation, various sea trips will take place and an informative area will be available to encourage sailing as a sport.
The show has a more leisurely atmosphere, the Fun Beach Area, a test area with access to the sea to practice light sailing, kayak or paddle surf sessions. A new edition of the Barcelona SUP Festival will take place, a gathering of paddle surfers who will practice this sport in the waters of Port Vell; and the third edition of the Barcelona Paddle Race, a competition in the open sea with departure from the Boat Show and arrival at Badalona’s marina.
The show will reinforce the area as a Traditional Marina in the Moll of Spain, with an exhibition of classic boats and where workshops and activities for the whole family will take place.
In addition to being the best commercial showcase of the Spanish nautical scene, the show is also a dynamic platform for the sector. In this sense, the Espai de Mar will have an extensive agenda of professional conferences in which prominence will be given to startups linked to the nautical sector; an international conference on the management of plastic waste at sea and the first Women of the Sea Forum, among others.
The Professional Meetings, a series of business meetings to promote new contacts and business between exhibitors and visitors, will complete what is offered by the Barcelona International Boat Show.
