The Spanish branch of World Wildlife for Nature (WWF) has submitted a petition to parliament calling for a “whale sanctuary” in the Canary Islands. Around 52,000 signatures are on the document which aims to ensure adequate animal protection which is compatible with human activity. The WWF says an area near Lanzarote and Fuerteventura already supports over a third of all species of whales and dolphins.
