Scientists say they have developed an early warning system which can predict earthquakes in southern Spain. Investigators from Madrid’s Complutense University say pioneering alerts in China, Japan and the US have proved viable and allow high-speed trains to be slowed and industrial processes to be halted. Nine people died in Lorca during Andalucía’s most-recent serious earth tremor in 2011.
