Divers want to create the underwater museum in the sea beneath the cliffs at the edge of the Maro - Cerro Gordo natural park

A PROPOSAL has been put forward to create a sub-aquatic museum off the coast of Nerja. The idea follows the recent opening of such an attraction on Lanzarote.

The idea has come from Nerja Diving Centre, which has previously proposed an area of artificial reefs to protect underwater flora and fauna in the waters beneath the cliffs on the edge of Maro – Cerro Gordo natural park.

A diving centre representative last week met mayor Rosa Arrabal and others to explain in detail the project which, proponents say, would also encourage the regeneration of plant life on the sea bed that has been destroyed. Mayor Arrabal is reported to have agreed to study the proposal, which it is believed would help break the “seasonality” of tourism in Nerja and would a benefit to the local environment, as well as creating jobs.
