It was with shock and horror that I read your article in Friday’s (September 2) Costa Blanca News about the appalling torture of a young calf, under the guise of tradition.
I support your decision to bring this terrible act to the attention of the general public. It’s only through public pressure that these things are brought to an end.
How can people defend this inhumane and callous act by calling it entertainment? The town hall that defended these actions should be ashamed of itself.
Whilst some regions in Spain are embracing the 21st century and banning blood sports as medieval and barbaric, there are still some regions who refuse to acknowledge how very wrong it is on all counts to torture and kill innocent animals; especially in this case which involved an innocent young animal, who was in no way able to defend itself.
The Spanish government (if we ever get one) should intervene and impose a nationwide ban on these cruel and inhumane ‘sports’. There are strict rules imposed on members of the European Union on the treatment of live animals, so why does Spain’s treatment of animals in its bullrings and fiestas manage to carry on unchecked?
I hope that the demonstration due to be held on September 10 is heavily supported and that the animal rights’ group who brought this appalling act to all our attention can bring pressure to bear to get this terrible ‘tradition’ banned forever.
