I’m no expert but in answer to Sheila’s snake identification question I would say it is a “Horse Shoe whip snake” (Hemorrhois hippocrepis or Coluber hippocreppis). It is found over a wide area of Spain and the Spanish Mediterranean coast. It can grow up to 1.5 metres (5 ft), is non poisonous, and seems happy to live close to human habitation where it preys on small rodents.
