Easter week in Spain: The rough guide

Semana Santa, or ‘Holy Week’, is dramatic, passionate, emotional and traditional, but often shrouded in mystery for the uninitiated.

Readers who’ve grown up with chocolate eggs, daffodil-shaped bonnets, rabbit icons and hot-cross buns are likely to find Easter something of a culture shock when they move to Spain – scary-looking parades, graphic crucifixion images and solemn drum tattoos are a world away from the Anglo-Saxon tradition of the sugar overdose and four days off work to sit in the pub or join the motorway tailbacks for a rainy day eating soggy, vinegary chips on the nearest pebble beach.
