A top British rock musician has drowned while on holiday in Níjar.

Session guitarist Michael Casswell, 53, who played in the West End Queen musical ‘We Will Rock You’, died last Friday (September 30) while swimming off Las Negras beach, a well known beauty spot in the Cabo de Gata nature park.

Another man, a 51-year-old German national, dived in the sea to help Mr Casswell, but also got into difficulties and was rushed to Torrecárdenas hospital, suffering from extensive bruising and respiratory problems.

London-based Casswell was a highly respected guitarist and had toured with many famous musicians, including Queen star Brian May, Joe Bonamassa and Steve Hacket, as well as pop stars Ronan Keating and Tony Hadley.
