Black panther seized in Arboleas

German expat owner had hidden feline in dog carrier

The panther - a young leopard with melanism - was unharmed despite its ordeal

Guardia Civil agents have seized a black panther from the home of a German man in Arboleas.

The feline was found inside a small cage hidden on the second level of a warehouse in the neighbourhood of El Chopo, sources said.

The Guardia said the panther had been seized because the man lacked a proper permit for keeping such an exotic species. He was charged with smuggling a wild animal but not arrested, contrary to what appeared in some press reports.

The owner, who initially refused to let the Guardia in, was also found in possession of a large number of exotic birds and small mammals.
