Welders spark ignites cargo in Italy-bound merchant ship

A SPECTACULAR fire onboard an Italy-bound merchant ship docked at Alicante Port on Monday saw more than 20 firemen fighting the blaze for over five hours.

Port sources say that a spark from a welding operation being carried out in the hold of the vessel set fire to the ships cargo.

A soon as the alarm was raised at around 09.00 the port authority put its emergency plan into action.

A huge pall of black smoke could be seen emanating from the hold of th ship which was docked at berth 13 of the port.
