Wild West camp held upThemed camping complex planned for Tabernas
A PLANNED ‘Wild West’ style campsite in Tabernas has been given the go-ahead by the regional government of Andalucía and now awaits the final stamp of approval from the local town hall to begin construction, the promoters claim. The proposed project, which is backed by a British-run company –Elegant Homes Online – covers a large 12-hectare plot of land opposite the site of the castle on the outskirts of Tabernas and has been on the drawing board for more three and a half years, according to company director, Michael Chaplin. Speaking exclusively to the Costa Almeria News, Mr Chaplin described how his proposal would create work for the area and attract much needed tourism. He said: “The company is going to invest upwards of one million euros, provide 14 full-time jobs and a similar number of seasonal jobs for local residents, and of course will also provide jobs during the construction phase.” The area is already home to a number of theme parks, such as the Oasys Park and Mini Hollywood, which sprouted a few years ago as a result of the town’s historical film industry, with tens of films shot in the spaghetti Western genre using Almería’s parched desert landscape as a backdrop.
