Murder inquiry puts mayor behind bars

THE MARINA Baja was shocked yesterday (Thursday) when the Villajoyosa judge handling the inquiry into the murder of Polop mayor Alejandro Ponsoda sent his successor Juan Cano to prison without bail.

Mayor Cano was arrested by Guardia Civil during the early hours of Monday. Eyewitnesses saw Sr Cano carrying a laptop PC and being escorted out of the town hal by officers. He was not handcuffed.

Sources close to the investigation say the officers had been searching his house and the town hall for evidence linked with the murder investigation.

After spending several nights in a Guardia Civil cell Sr Cano was taken to Villajoyosa court yesterday, where he refused to answer questions regarding the death of Sr Ponsoda two years ago.

Just after 16.30 it was announced that Sr Cano was to be sent to Fontcalent prison without bail.
