A 70-YEAR-old man was attacked and stung by bees as he walked with his wife on the Tossal Gros mountain.
The German man, resident in Benitachel, was attacked at around 13.00 on Wednesday as he walked past some beehives in Partida del Racó de Nadal.
Police believe he did not see the warning signs in the area and got too close to the hives causing the bees to react violently.
As the bees attacked the man enmasse, his wife was able to run to find an area where there was mobile telephone coverage. From there she called the emergency control centre.
Rescue teams called to scene searched for over an hour but it wasn't until a beekeeper arrived on the scene to control the bees that the victim was found.
He took the man in his van to the local police chief José Mayans, who was also in the area.
During the attack the victim was sting more than 300 times but fortunately did not suffer any allergic reactions.
Sr Mayans said that when the man was brought to him, his face and arms were covered in stings but he was not showing any signs of panic and remained very calm.
