Mobile phone cut-off

Unidentifiable handsets to be switched off

By Tom Cain
THOUSANDS of expat mobile phone users could be cut off later this year if they own a non-registered pay-as-you-go phone.

From November 9, 2007, people who purchased pre-paid mobile phones have been obliged to provide proof of identity, but for those who purchased phones before this date, a two-year period of grace was granted which runs out on November 9.
It is estimated that more than 15 million pay-as-you-go phones are still unregistered in Spain.

A recent consumer survey shows that 70 per cent of expats in Spain use unregistered pre-paid mobiles, and with time running out they have less than eight months in which to go to their individual operator and have their details recorded.

registering spanish mobile
I was in Spain for two weeks in July and visited Vodaphone store 4 times to register my mobile. Each time I was told that their system was down. I won't be going back before November. Can I register on-line?

Mobile Phones
It's your Spanish mobile phone number (0034 6xxxxx) that you must register before November 2009. A non-Spanish mobile being used in Spain is not affected.

MOBILE SIM CARDS
Official Vodafone ES website comments:-
1. REQUIREMENTS
General requirements for the VF prepaid card
The Prepaid Card Data Conservation Act was passed on 8 November 2007.
For clients requesting information on the Act:
- The law requires all operators selling prepaid cards to maintain a record with the
personal information corresponding to the name, surname, type of personal
identification document, document number and address of all prepaid card
buyers/owners.
Therefore, from that date, the following will apply when any new prepaid card is
activated: activation must be carried out in person and a personal identification
document must be provided (passport or residence card) at the moment of
purchase at the Vodafone point of sale.
Clients who have already provided Vodafone with their personal details and also
those who have not must be informed that:
- Current owners of prepaid cards will have 24 months (until 8 November 2009) to
provide their personal details at any Vodafone shop or authorised dealer, after which
time all operators, by law, must deactivate any unidentified cards. Indicate the time
limit, as there is no need to do this right now. The time limit is quite extensive (2
years).

DUH
Re-K Flyer, who comments on my question about sim cards and replies with an ignorant, uneducated bombastic reply such as DUH, may I remind him that a mobile phone is quite a different tool and shape for that matter than a sim card, suggest he looks into a dictionary and seeks the definition. Purchasing a mobile phone is quite different than purchasing a sim card
