MEPs back critique of Spain’s construction industry

THE EU’s petitions committee today (Wednesday) approved Margrete Auken’s controversial report which highlights the abuses committed by Costa builders – despite an attempt by Spanish MEPs to sink it.

The document, which paves the way for European funds for Spain to be halted, will now go before the full European parliament next month.

At the meeting the amendments proposed by the Partido Popular (PP) and the Socialist party (PSOE) – designed to lessen the impact of the hard-hitting report – were voted down.

And, much to the displeasure of the Spanish MEPs, amendments which made the report even tougher were passed.

Green party MEP David Hammerstein said: “The PP and PSOE have been marginalised.

“Their arguments have not convinced anyone because thousands of citizens have seen the development abuses and the ecological impact of this model of building.”
