Waiters at some 500 bars and restaurants in Málaga province are to be taught the Heimlich manoeuvre in an effort to save the lives of diners who choke on a piece of food.

The scheme, SOS Respira (SOS Breathe), is being rolled out in a number of Spanish cities by Fundación Mapfre, the Spanish Federation of Chefs and Pastry Cooks (FACYRE) and the Spanish Society of Emergency Medicine (SEMES). Organisers say it is aimed at reducing the more than 1,400 deaths from choking recorded in Spain each year.
