LOCAL police from Estepona and surrounding towns underwent a special training session last week on combating ‘pirate taxis’, the unlicensed cab services that have long been a complaint of legitimate taxi drivers in towns all along the coast.

The training up of officers is aimed at “pursuing people who are illegally exercising this activity, which poses economic damage to the professionals in the sector by reducing their potential clients,” said the town hall.

Deputy mayor Ana Velasco added that “this illegal practice does not meet labour and safety conditions required for official vehicles dedicated to [providing taxi services],” and the drivers and cars “are not authorised or certified”.
