GIBRALTAR’S famous monkeys, the Barbary macaques, have been upgraded to total trade ban protection under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES).

The Barbary macaque (Macaca sylvanus), native to Morocco and Algeria, had its protection status upgraded to the highest level at last week’s CITES Conference of the Parties meeting in Johannesburg, completely prohibiting the commercial international trade of the species.
