More than 1,000 would-be immigrants staged an “extremely violent and organised” assault on the border fence between Ceuta and Morocco in the early hours of New Year’s Day. Five Spanish and 50 Moroccan security guards were injured, one seriously, in the incident which resulted in only two individuals reaching Spanish soil. Reports say the assailants were armed with iron bars, shears and large stones.
