Elderly woman’s death highlights ‘energy poverty’

The 81-year-old, whose electricity had been cut off, died in a fire at her home

THERE has been outrage expressed across Spain in the last 10 days following the death of an 81-year-old woman in a house fire at Reus, near Tarragona, in the south of Cataluña. Her electricity supplier cut her off two months earlier because of unpaid bills, and a candle she was using is believed to have set fire to her mattress.
