Albox fire station is now up and running, staffed by members of the Levante brigade after its closure at the beginning of the year – but with a hugely reduced team.

The Diputación-run unit is now operating with only three fire fighters, compared to the team of around 12 that were based there under council management, before it was handed over to the provincial council on January 1.

Meanwhile 10 new fire fighters have been added to the Almería city brigade, bringing the total team to 98, according to a fire service spokesman.

The new recruits, who started work this week, include for the first time ever a female fire fighter.
