Bédar resident Philippa Vickery is on a mission to reduce pollution in her area

A British woman in Bédar has launched an online petition to halt industrial plant pollution in the province – and says she is prepared to fight a lengthy campaign for the sake “of the area’s future”.

Philippa Vickery, 44, said she started the ‘Stop Air Pollution in Almería’ petition on the Change.org site after becoming increasingly concerned that nothing was being done to deal with the problem.

Despite being one of the most picturesque villages in the province, Bédar is regularly listed as one of Andalucía’s most heavily polluted areas in air quality studies.

Ms Vickery, who has lived in Bédar for 11 years, said she first became aware of the issue after reading a World Health Organisation report about air pollution some nine years ago.

She said: “Bédar is a beautiful tiny village, but every year I keep hearing that it’s also one of the most polluted areas in the whole of Spain.”
