The death at the weekend of a 68-year-old Briton whose charred body was found inside a burnt-out vehicle has shocked the quiet hill-top village of Oria.

Firemen found Keith Bleakley’s remains inside his wife’s Ford Focus, which was parked outside the couple’s home on Padre Méndez street.

The tragedy unfolded shortly before 11pm on Saturday when, for reasons still unknown, the vehicle caught fire with Mr Bleakley still in the driver’s seat.

Neighbours reportedly rushed to put the fire out with buckets of water and a fire extinguisher, but the vehicle was enveloped in flames within a short time.

By the time firemen arrived from Albox, some 20 kilometres away, the fire had burnt itself out.

A picture taken at the scene by the fire brigade soon afterwards shows the property’s walls blackened by the intense smoke and the burnt-out wreckage of the car facing the couple’s garage.
