A British expat is on a mission to clean up one of Almería’s most emblematic landscapes – the Tabernas desert.

Julian Phillips, a 46-year-old teacher, says the area is being used as a rubbish dump and has accused the local council of turning a blind eye to the problem.

In response, he has opened a Facebook page, titled El Desierto de Tabernas – el secreto sucio (the dirty secret), to launch a clean-up campaign, and with the help of eight volunteers a tonne-and-a-half of rubbish was removed in the first operation last Sunday, October 16.
